The useful starting point
Compare COPALUM, AlumiConn and copper rewiring by method, complete coverage, installer requirements and the records you should receive.
Three paths, three different scopes
A repair-method name should help you understand a quotation. It should not replace the assessment of the actual property. Start by separating a connection-remediation project, which retains the original aluminum circuit conductors, from a rewiring project, which replaces specified conductors. Then ask which locations the proposed work includes.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s June 2011 Publication 516 discusses copper replacement, the COPALUM system and AlumiConn as an alternative when COPALUM is unavailable. This is dated U.S. consumer guidance. It does not settle local approval, exact product application or your insurer’s requirements.
Compare the method and the deliverable
| Option | What changes | What to ask the professional |
|---|---|---|
| COPALUM | Uses a dedicated crimp system to create copper extensions; original aluminum conductors remain. | Confirm current manufacturer authorization, system suitability, connection coverage and completion records. |
| AlumiConn | Uses a setscrew connector system for appropriate aluminum-to-copper connections; original conductors remain. | Confirm the exact product, permitted application, enclosure constraints and installation instructions. |
| Copper rewiring | Replaces the conductors identified in the quotation. Partial rewiring leaves other circuits in place. | Identify every retained circuit, new route, access opening, finish repair and inspection deliverable. |
A good connector cannot repair a location left out
Compare the coverage schedule before the price. A quote limited to visible receptacles cannot silently become a whole-property remediation statement. Ask how switches, lighting locations, junctions and permanently connected equipment are addressed where relevant. Inaccessible or excluded locations should remain visible in the completion record.
If one quote covers a complete surveyed inventory and another covers a fixed device allowance, the totals describe different projects. Ask each bidder to price the same defined scope and identify what happens if additional locations or damaged conductors are discovered. Agree on change authorization before work starts.
Choose with the property constraints in view
A renovation that already opens walls can change the practicality of replacement. An occupied finished home may present different access and restoration costs. A condominium can add ownership and shutdown boundaries. These factors belong beside method suitability, rather than being treated as afterthoughts.
Use the quote-scope guide and scope planner to record the alternatives. Have the electrician explain the recommendation for this installation and obtain the recipient’s documentation requirements before selecting work intended to satisfy an insurance or sale deadline.
